Sexual abuse scandal involving students

The 2 recent sexual abuse scandal involving school children from Machava Basic School in Maputo is another proof that safeguarding is everyone’s business and should not be taken as a compliance issue. Safeguarding culture should be cultivated in institutions, as it is a moral and legal obligation to ensure the education institutions are a safe place for all children, boys and girls. Now, the focus should not on finding the culprit of the story, but to challenge ourselves in changing how private and public schools are being run. Developing safeguarding policies, training teachers and students, would key steps to initiate the discussions. SEA education campaigns should be part of the day-to-day activities. As much as the perpetrators are minors and cannot be held accountable before the law, let’s not forget about the survivor and the support they need.
